My idea for the project was to assemble a fairly quick and easy compatible set for a fraction of the cost for someone who already had the game system.
I had a lot of fun choosing various minis that I thought were close approximations of the various characters, but in some cases I got a little imaginative
with some of the cooler looking figures from the Reaper Bones series (which includes miniatures for "Pathfinder").These were painted in solid colors using various acrylics (mostly Apple Barrel mixtures of gloss & matte, or varnished with Americana DecoArt Duraclear... though a few were colored using good ol' P3's (mainly the undeads). They were super glued (a few were attached with vallejo plastic putty) to uxcell plastic end caps (trimmed with an exacto knife for square or rectangular bases).

Edit: Note, "Dark Heaven" is actually their series of metal minis, sorry for any confusion. I exclusively used "Bones" (white/gray plastic) and "Bone Black" (stiffer gray plastic) for this. If you prefer metal, many are available that way too, for a higher price.
