Thanks for the feedback, guys! :)

@ Weltenlaeufer: Once again, your very kind words are very much appreciated, buddy! If you can believe it, the way those wooden parts came out was quite a surprise to me as well. The good news is that I have found it really easy to create a pretty convincing wood effect with a very simple mixture of stippling, drybrushing and painting on some wavy lines. I may go into the approach in more detail in the future!

@ Maurice76: The blood effect was actually created with Tamiya Clear Red (although GW's Blood for the Blood God paint works just as well), a very useful tool for creating really convincing blood effect. The paint also comes glossy, so there's no extra varnish involved (that being said, I did seal the model using matte varnish before adding the blood, of course).

So a fair bit of my hobby session earlier today was spent with the rather thankless task of finishing the door bases for HeroQuest:

But I soldiered on, and now the doors are done as well -- including a few spares:

And with that, I have actually completed my HeroQuest set (minus the Men-at-arms, but those will have to wait for a bit yet). Here's a look at all of the finished furniture collected in one place:

And all of the stuff I managed to paint over the Easter holiday:

As always, let me know what you think! :)

Great stuff everywhere I look on this thread!

I think the model you used for Ulag/Grak really works well. I love his shield.
But the best thing for me is the monster art you added to the table on your altar. Brilliant idea.
I’m going to have to paint the rest of my furniture now, and maybe even steal your idea for that book... |_P

Cheers, Pancho! Yeah, I am really proud of that book page -- a rather spontaneous idea, that one, and I am honestly surprised that it worked out so well ;)

In other news, I was finally able to pick up the last missing pieces to make my HeroQuest set complete again: The character boards.

Image

Now this was the one instance where I had to venture into the den of madness that is trying to buy HQ items off ebay, but I got an okay deal, the boards got here without further damage, and they are in fairly good condition, considering their age, so all's well that ends well.

I am also currently painting my first non-HQ model in over a month and it does feel kinda...sacrilegious -- is that weird? ;)

Your drybrushing on the wood works is amazing, i don't see how that could ever be improved upon.

Funny enough i like the way you did the bases. It's really simple but it seems to work well with the HeroQuest tiles. i might steal that for some of my monsters!

Cheers, guys! :)

@ Diggin: I think the recipe for the bases (and doors) is involved enough to be fairly realistic from an in-game perspective (looking at least a bit like stone), yet also highlights the somewhat artificial nature of the models as playing pieces (especially for the monsters that usually use almost identical sculpts). Plus it was a quick effect to achieve, which is always nice ;)

@ Weltenlaeufer: Cheers, mate! And don't worry, this thread is far from finished! I still have quite a few ideas on how to expand on this project... ;)

On a somewhat related note, I had a game of "Mice and Mystics" at a local boardgame café earlier this week. It's delightfully HeroQuest-esque in many ways, as I had hoped. Plus it has cute mice in fantasy costumes -- what's not to love?

Annie painted the café's copy of the game, and playing with a fully painted set was, of course, a special delight. The artwork is rather lovely as well!
