Betrayal at House on the Hill

Postby joec » April 29th, 2011, 9:43 am

My gaming group still gets together, even though we aren't currently playing HeroQuest. Usually it involves dinner, and some type of game. The last two meetups involved "Betrayal at House on the Hill."

Have you guys seen this game? It's like Warhammer Quest in that the game board expands randomly as you make choices. You and the other players are investigating this House on the Hill. You slowly make your way through the house, investigating as supernatural events slowly occur. As you activate Events and find Items, you can set off Omens. You then make a roll on the special 0-1-2 six sided dice to see if a Haunt occurs. If a Haunt occurs... The game is on.

You look at the Omen that set off the Haunt and the room where it occurred. You then consult a chart and determine who is the Traitor. The Traitor reads a Traitor's guide in another room and the rest of the players read another guide. Then... The game is truly on.

Now the Traitor and the Heroes have to both work toward their own goals to try to win. It's been hair-raising, and anyone who likes HeroQuest and a bit of gothic horror will LOVE this game. I love it, but I don't want to get burned out on it... Two weeks in a row has gotten me to start looking at Vampire: the Masquerade again, and possibly re-reading Vampire: the Requiem. We'll see though.

you can play an online demo here.

Sort of. But once the Haunt starts, the game changes to something like a quest, except the baddies role is called the traitor, and you never know who's going to take that role.

In one session, one player controlled themselves and a serial killer called Crimson Jack, all of a sudden coming after the other players. Another time, A player got eaten by a Zombie Lord, then moved zombies throughout the house. And when I suddenly became the traitor, the players had to rescue a girl found in the house. My goal was to keep them from getting to her, trying to kill them or blow up the house before they could escape with her.

That sounds like a really good game. I'll have to track one down.

Well, it's been a while since I've been around, but friends and I got together on Halloween for some Betrayal fun...

Here's me as the Witch Lord for Halloween:

Betrayal is a wonderful little game...but I allways have bad luck with the groundskeeper. EVERY GAME I seem to draw him and he ALWAYS plants his shovel on my face...

I'm not sure how anecdotal I can be without ruining haunts for others, but I can say that the most fun we had were when we had to sacrifice the priest in the basement, with just enough time so that two of us survived. Take that, betrayer! :P

I had fun keeping the others from taking the girl from me. I've also slayed Crimson Jack and the Zombie Lord.

I played it (in a traduced version) with many friends.
We like it a lot.
However after a second reedition, this boardgame was locked in the usa and was never traduced into other languages.
