Because usernames are re-used by people, including spammers. Such as the one I wanted to use today, "JJJ". Apparently it is on the spammer list that this site links to. Although the reference check to that list does not go for exact matches, which is a real flaw.
Would have been nice to get a better error message than merely "One or more of the fields entered was marked as spam." That gives no clue as to what the actual problem is, nor how to remedy it. It is fortunate that search engines returned this thread and the link to stopforumspam.com, because otherwise I would never have worked out why I could not register, and I would certainly have written off this site.
