[Solo Quest] Wizard - A Maze Of Doors

Postby Drew » February 5th, 2020, 4:27 pm

This quest is written by wallydubbs.
With his permission I worked on it to turn it from a quest in paper to a proper quest.
This quest is specifically made for a Wizard who died and needs to reclaim all his lost artifacts.
You can play this quest with just the Game System.

Here is a pdf for those who like their quests more "complete" with artwork, artifacts etc included:

Interesting! I think a hero will get very confused by jumping from a door to another.
It may takes hours to play it as the dice roll may be tricking. Did someone tested this?
I only don't like the fact that the Wizard may lose 1 BP when trying to pass through some doors or trap doors. Can't find a connection with the two things. If it is related to the magic powers of the location maybe better to lose mind points instead of body points (he also has more). It can be frustrating if a wizard has 1 last BP and the only thing he can do is cross a door... and die!

I just converted the quest from papers to this format. I have neither tested it or had any involvement to the story or notes or maps. This quest is faithful to the original I only did the photoshop, heroscribe, etc.
So I cant really answer any such question. I think the writer did test it and found it working good though.

Also, could you share the Heroscribe XML? Thanks for that! I might respectless change a thing or two after my test tonight.

Why is Wallydubbs silent in this thread? It's a great quest, creative, maze-y, I like it.

Then, I am not sure about how to calculate the fights of this quest, to be honest.
Normally, when calculating, I just leave the wizard aside. He gets, like, 10% of the fighting; so has few influence.

Imagine the wizard has two healings, but uses them to less great effect when he has still 2 BP left, that makes a hero with 8 BP. An Elixir of life refills the dead wizard to 4 BP, makes 12. The Recall spell may be used to recall another healing that makes 14 BP to spend in this quest. Well. Minus one to survive.
If he goes to maximum risk and heals only when he's down to 1 BP, he can spend 3 BP more, that's 17 BP.

If I calculate this quest with the wizard as a hero with 8BP, 2 AT and 2 DE, he fights all the monsters, and three wandering monsters, then he dies. 97%. But the calculation is off somewhat, more of down this posting.

For this wizard, the monsters are just deadly.
Every Mummy costs 2.6 BP.
The Chaos Warrior costs 6.4 BP. (With both potions it costs less, around 1.5 BP with luck)
A wandering Zombie costs 1 BP (I took that one x3)
Two Orcs as group cost 3 BP
Three Goblins as group cost 3.3 BP
The Fimir costs 2.2 BP
Every Skeleton, if he fights them, costs 0.4 BP

in total the quest monsters cost 25 BP.
Traps cost 5 BP, but they're all avoidable.
Trap doors cost 2 BP.
The Boss fight is not accounted for.

But.
That's not taking into account wizard-like tactics, like running away from the mummies constantly instead of fighting them, and does not even start to think about the magic he may use here and there.

So I was rewriting the questimator Hero-group-definition.
The wizard has now a friend with Rock Skin that has 1 BP and who can die like a mercenary.
Also I calculated a potioned-up wizard against those monsters.
And a wizard with cloak. And one with Courage. And then I tried to make a soup from those ingredients.

He finds his staff in the first room.
If he takes the right door, he finds his cloak next. Then not all of the monsters need to be fought.

Removing the skeletons and two of the three wandering zombies, then taking Rock skin right at the start, avoiding all traps, the picture looks totally different:
The Wizard has a chance of about 30% of dying in the quest. If he understands, perhaps in the second or third try, that it is possible and advisable to avoid the "J" Labyrinth, it's even better.

I'd say: That's okay! Man, we're all adults, the wizard is a total beginner without history, it's a solo quest (so it plays rather quick compared to a group quest), you can retry in a minute.

Great quest! Wallydubbs showed elsewhere that he is quite capable to exactly find the border of ouch; and he did it again :D |_P
Now I'd like to playtest it but no chance, wife and daughter are at home.

I have a couple of questions to wallydubbs:
What happens if the Wizard will use the Genie to open one of the D doors?
Can a Pass Through Rock be used to cross the walls and walk (for example) from position n. 3 to n. 4?

Hey guys, sorry for my absence, I wasn't aware this conversation was going on until Drew told me. Special thanks to him for putting this out there.

Yes, I have playtested this quest on my own and with my girlfriend.
I'd like to point out in the Castle of Mystery section (J) of the map, on a roll of 1 the Wizard loses 1 Mind Point, not body points. The idea there was that teleporting constantly could cause some disorientation.
As for the Trap doors, I suppose losing a body point could be crucial for the Wizard... but in the few quests that these trap doors appear (Keller's Keep and Mage of the Mirror), the notes say the passage may be filled with traps. So I was just trying to be faithful to those quests, but one can make adjustments where they see fit.
