Well, you guys, as usual, have offered great insights. I think I will simply use the base
quest pack when I do start my son playing HQ again. I agree - he should get the full
historical experience of classic HQ, and learn to enjoy what it should be at its core.

I might still offer my expanded equipment and spells, perhaps. We'll see. Especially if,
at any point, Aaron's friends or my nephews ever start playing.

Thanks for all the responses. :) Have a great one.

I wouldn't even go that far to start with. Let them experience the genuine article first and then maybe start adding stuff in KK and RotWL but play the core quests exactly as they were meant to be played. :2cents:

Heroquest has a tradition to introduce something new each quest. You spoil that by introducing everything in the first quest.

It's what keeps players addicted: Learn something new, display new skills, find out something new.

Nothing against expansions - but one thing per quest is the best pace, in my opinion! So you start vanilla, and later you add sprinkles. :)

I never play with newbs. Every one I have played HQ with came from a solid background of High Fantasy style RPG games. HQ is my way to get away from the storyline we have been playing so I get a break from excessive thinking. (then I go and muck that up by playing HQ in a semi advanced fashion) HQ is much easier regardless...I have 1-3 pages of quest notes, miniatures, and a set of tiles with a battle mat. Almost all the work is pre done. And they never truly leave the dungeon in a way. The quest ends and next time we play, they spend a few coins and they are back in the dungeon. None of this 6 months of played out travel getting to the dungeon...
The players at my table are already primed to be able to deal with everything I can throw at them.

Not that I am opposed to newbs, just never had one at my HQ table.

I had a newbie, my cousin. He had never played anything like HQ whatsoever, and fell in love with the game. No reason why you shouldn't have vanilla rules. It worked for him. ;)

I'm glad you got to play. Things were going well--did you finish The Trial? What about the other Quests?
