Hoping to play soon

Postby torilen » June 22nd, 2016, 9:31 am

I'm trying to get up motivation to play HQ with my son soon. Send some positive thoughts
or prayers (or whatever floats your boat) my way. I haven't decided if I want to just use
the basic quest pack or create my own quests and story line. I know he wants to play,
and I really want to play, and want him to be able to play. Life has been so busy lately,
I just don't have the energy or mental capacity to run things. I am hoping this will change
soon.

Otherwise...all is good...and I hope all is good with everyone else.

I know exactly what you mean. Since they found out that I am actually capable of doing certain things, they pile their work on me that I am not even able to think in the evening.

Good luck tell me how it is going!

Personally I would prefer to go through the vanilla experience with any new player first. Don't cheat them out of all the classic quests we all know by heart.
House rules, mods, and custom content are all great, but everybody deserves to feel the original authentic HeroQuest.

Also if you are sorta stressed out, NOT creating a tailor made quest pack is a big burden off your shoulders to be quite frank!

+1, but with blatantly broken rules fixed, like being able to disarm any trap in sight or being able to drink a potion or cast a spell after death in the US rules.

Absolutely! By "house rules" I mean stuff like dual wielding or fixed movement etc etc. Of course you have to address all the ambiguities and broken stuff.
I kinda differentiate between house "rules" and house "rulings" if that makes sense :)

IDK...
Sort of like having plain ice-cream and not using sprinkles, chocolates and berry syrup when it is right there. Plain is better than nothing, but why not throw on the extras? You have them.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.

Of course that's all very subjective...

Tradition - Letting the player know what the actual game is all about. It's a bit like history. You gotta know about the past to really appreciate the present.
Different taste - Maybe the player actually prefers plain vanilla? (sprinkles, chocolates and berry syrup sound vulgar! :D)
Learning curve - Start with the basic game before adding rules for recovering arrows, making a tumble and throwing the arrow like a dart while checking for a critical hit.

Sprinkles, chocolates, and berry syrup is exactly what spoils a bowl of otherwise perfect vanilla ice cream.
Plain is better than everything in one bowl.
I do hope I'm not the only one feeling that way, if not as an allegory for HQ, then as an outlook on consumerism.

EDIT: Then again, it's a distinct possibility you guys in the states don't have any vanilla icecream that deserves the moniker,
so I don't wanna make this a social discussion. Just pointing out the fact that vanilla is, in fact, the way to go in torilen's situation.
Finding and calrifying the errors will probably be the path to rediscover his mojo in the first place.
