I am working on a Quick Start guide now - it will be up for free as soon as it is finished.
This will give players 5 characters, ready to play. They will be a Human Warrior type character,
an Elf Ranger type, a Dwarf Priest type, a Halfling rogue/thief type, and a Gnome Wizard type.
It will also include a short adventure that walks the GM and players through some of the basics
of how to play - moving through the wild, searching, combat, etc. There will be pieces in the
adventure which the GM will either read to himself/herself, or will read to the players, that will
show them exactly how certain actions are done.
Basically, though, it is like this. I took the HeroQuest game...the game play, to be specific...and
created my own role playing game from it. The game play is very similar...players use regular six-
sided dice for their rolls. Most rolls are successful with a 4 or 5 or 6 (the equivalent of the skulls on
the combat dice). Some roll are only successful with a 5 or 6 (equivalent of white shields).
I added a lot to it, though. I added actions - jumping, swimming, climbing, etc. - and I designed a
means of making the characters better at what they do. This does not use classes or levels, like most
RPG's. The characters have to use their treasure (gold) to train in whatever they wish...weapon use,
magic, healing, enchanting weapons and armor, weapon craft, etc. You can make any sort of character
you wish, as long as you have the gold and the time to do so. I have rules that explain how much gold it
takes to train for specific areas, and how long they take. Most training is done during a period of 8 hours
for so many days...this leaves some time during the day in which the characters can do other things,
leaving room for good roleplaying, if the group likes to do that. If not...they can just skip through all
of that sort of thing, the GM can stipulate that the training was completed, and they can go on
their way.
I started with the base monsters and spells from HeroQuest, and added A LOT to these. I also added a
lot of home-designed treasures and magic items, as well. You can actually get a feel for what those
will be - look at my expansion rules - the monsters, spells, and treasures I posted here are most of the
same for my game system - just rewritten to fit properly.
I will post here when the Quick Start Guide is ready to download.
