It really doesn't. It's very literally "kill all the monsters before they kill you".
You barely have a "character". The heroes are premade, and everything is reset after each game = no progression.
SDE is in no way a RPG except in theme. It's still a very good game though. It does what it does excellently.

GameZone is testing the game now with existing prototypes and professional gamers in the UK and Spain. (people who mainly playtest games and are used to do that)
In mid september, you should be able to read the rules and make suggestions of the beta rule pack.
They are still producing intensively all the elements of the game and have a great advance. something good because they are still promising the game for christmas.

It's almost been a year since I started this thread. Every thing I have been told or found out about it is that its a bust and won't go ahead.... So why are they taking pre-orders on their site even though there is no release date set.
Is it going to be permanently stuck in limbo, with gamezone taking peoples money and what about all the money from kickstarter what has happened to that?
At this point why don't they just change the name of the game and release it to save face, and money, as it really doesn't have much in common with HQ any more anyway.

No.... there was way too much bad press to start with. It just makes me wonder what did happen to all the money. That and It would have been nice, more models and everything. Hey Ho!

I don't think it's a bust just yet, they're releasing updates and pictures of furniture and miniatures every few days now, almost 100 different sculpts have been shown by their promoter. It's all spanish companies involved, so English readers will have to dig a little deeper.

if i am not mistaken then the makers have the trademark in European countries, but not in the UK and in the US, they haven't made any agreements with Hasbro (who own the Intelectual Property or Copyrights)
a trademark is the right to use the name (Heroquest i guess), the copyright is the right to copy elements of the game.

If the game finishes, then it would be just about as legal as "Herocults", but if they get a lawsuit, then that will be after the first waves are sent.
But a company can't just file a lawsuit overseas when it comes to boardgames, they're not protected very well in US law, but as it's a UK game things might be different. I don't know UK law, might be very different.

I have been (am) curious also to see what will ultimately come of this. From what I have read here and there, it will not and cannot be stocked by US distributors but could be purchased directly from the company by individuals.

Assuming it does in fact go into production...

So much bad press and negative responses have kept me pretty dubious about the outcome. Enough to keep me from investing in a pre-order for fear of never seeing a return. However, there is a wistful. hopeful part of me that would actually like to see this thing get published.

Fact is, it's stupid to me that HQ has not been re-published before now by the principles. Maybe there is not enough money to be made, and only die-hard fans would really be interested--but I don't believe it myself. As I have said before, I would love to see what Fantasy Flight could do with the property. I know they have Descent and now Imperial Assault, but to me one of the beautiful things about HQ was it's simplicity. I think there would be room for that in the current market.

GW isn't interested in specialist games because they can make 80 € with one large plastic figure.
That's the harsh and simple fact.

To be fair I would be surprised if GW manages to last much longer on their current track! :2cents:

This in spades. Gamers tend to have limited funds for their games. It is unwise to price yourself above the customers game budget.
So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss.
If you only know yourself, but not your opponent, you may win or may lose.
If you know neither yourself nor your enemy, you will always endanger yourself.
