Few questions about some HeroQuest Rules

Postby fasty » April 23rd, 2014, 3:07 pm

Good evening to everyone!

I have just read the last few quests of the basic set and I have few question about the rules.
I'm Zargon in the game, obviously.

- if the chaos spell "Command" is succesfully casted on a Hero owning magic powers (ex. Elf or Magician), is Zargon allowed to use their magic powers too? Can he open doors?
They can avoid getting controlled by Zargon by rolling dices as soon as the spell is casted during Zargon's turn, right?

- The Witch Lord can be attacked by the Spirit Blade only using three attack dices, is that correct?

- can heroes exchange their equipment and their objects throughout a quest?

Then I have a couple of questions that might seem stupid, but I haven't found anything about these in the rulebook:

- Is a monster forced to defend himself? I mean, if the monster is attacked, is Zargon forced to roll the dices to defend him or he can let the attacks be successful?
And is Zargon allowed to attack a hero controlled by him (i.e. through the "Command" spell) using a monster?

_ can monsters escape from the dungeon going on the Stairs Tile?

Thanks to anyone who will be patient enough to answer to this weird newbie! :D

I allow it, but don't do it just to waste their spells. I pretty much command them to perform any action they may make regularly. Same with potions, I allow it, but not for the purpose of wasting their potions.
Whether they can break the spell immediately depends on the spell. It will be listed on the card.

fasty wrote:- The Witch Lord can be attacked by the Spirit Blade only using three attack dices, is that correct?

Correct.

fasty wrote:- can heroes exchange their equipment and their objects throughout a quest?

This is later clarified in the Mage of the Mirror and Frozen Horror expansions.
Yes. As long as the Heroes are adjacent to each other and neither are adjacent to a Monster.

Zargon should roll defence for all attacks against monsters. There's no reason why Zargon cannot attack a Hero that is being controlled, but the Hero will roll defence.

In rare cases, some quest notes suggest trying to move special monster characters to the exit to escape. I suppose regular monster can do it as well, but what would be the benefit?

Thank you so much drathe!

As you have already noticed, the questions I made are not specified in the rulebook. For example when you say:
Zargon should roll defence for all attacks against monsters. There's no reason why Zargon cannot attack a Hero that is being controlled, but the Hero will roll defence

Was it the result of an agreement with the other players? (I mean: deciding to defend or not should be an option for everyone, both heroes and monsters...)

"If hit, the monster immediately defends by rolling its Defend Dice."

Generally speaking, you need to assume that "can vs cannot" always results in "cannot" being supreme. Therefore, if any cases where you perceive there to be an exception, if that exception does not specifically say "cannot," always assume "can."

Command allows you to use their spells. You should absolutely do it to waste their spells. You only have a few chances to cast the spell throughout the whole game--don't waste them. You're the fifth player, not the dungeon master.

The Spirit Blade specifies which targets qualify for five-dice, and the Witch Lord is not among them.

Heroes can only use one weapon each turn. They can pass objects and equipment freely, as long as they're adjacent to one-another and not a monster.

Monster's "immediately" defend after being attacked, by the rules.

Monsters are not allowed to move onto the stairs unless otherwise specified by a Quest.

The problem here seems to be exceptions where "cannot" isn't specified. When in doubt, always assume that you an do something unless otherwise specified. For instance, it seemed like 90% of the people here didn't understand that you can use the crossbow with the shield.

So by the same logic we can wear 3 helmets at once? ;)

That's hardly the same logic. Where in the game is there precedent for being able to simultaneously use two of anything? Both EU and NA rules read "the object," not "an object." "The helmet gives you 1 extra..." is a singular instance. In the EU cards armor is worded without "extra" to preclude whatever defense you have otherwise. "Chain mail allows you to roll..." is not referred to singularly because its description already provides mutual exclusion. With those defense items that gives "extra" defense, they are referred to singularly.

That's why "the" and "a/an" are different words.
