i can only speak for my own experience here, but first time i went to america i was shocked how many things had the 'with cheese' tag (although i love steak and cheese)
i guess its no different than going somewhere else in the world like scotland and finding out they deep fry everything lol.

The Dutch are famous for their cheeses. Gouda amongst the most known ones. Limburger too. They call us cheeseheads. Although that applies to the blond rural types.

Could the apparent American fascination with cheese have anything to do with agribusiness advertising for dairy products in the US? There are commercials for just "milk," and just "cheese." (Not to mention just "pork," and "beef," but that's another thread.)

"Got Milk?" and "Behold, the Power of Cheese!" to name a couple of the most famous examples.

They quit those 'got milk' commercials. Apparently people got offended or some sort because certain groups of people can't tolerate milk/dairy. I laughed when I heard that. There does be a lot of cheese with food I guess. I'd love to see other countries one day and see what their cheeses are like. Odysseus makes me want to try other cheeses now if it was good enough to make him cry.

Try OKA cheese, made by monks. Smells like someone used them for slippers, but tastes GREAT!
Rosenburg blue - took 10 years to develop the taste for it, but now I'm in!
The only Cheddar I'm interested in is 12 yr old aged.
There's a company called "Swiss Knight" that makes a mini 'wheel' with 2 of each 6 flavors. Very good!
Munster smells like stale old gym sneakers dipped in Windex.
It can stank up your entire kitchen - I speak from experience.
But man - is it delicious!

The best, however, is Normandy Camembert. Nothing can touch it; unpasteurized milk which you CAN get in Canada!

These are not sliced, but grated. Hence the barbarian flair to it.
I doubt that this stuff is really cheese in the traditional sense. I can almost taste it (which is not much) from here.

Oh, and camembert is best with grapes or with fig mustard.
