The extra greenstuff I had a while backwent onto some Chaos Warriors and they've been steadily calling my name. Fire effects are beyond what I can do right now and I know that. Since I'm a terribly slow painter I wanted to get a few peoples input or tips for painting fire as well as object lighting before I attempt this... I think it was GK that had some good fire effects I saw before but can't find again.

I did these if those are the ones you remember:

Fire goes:

Super hot = White
Very hot = Yellow
Pretty hot = Orange
Kinda hot = Red
Not that hot = Dark red

What is this? = Black

It is hottest near the origin of the flame and coldest at the tips.

As for OSL, just imagine the source (the actual flames) are real and has a certain "glow radius".
Anything near should be shaded with yellow/orange, then fade into the darker colors.
Dont' use the brightest (white) or darkest (dark red/black), that will look weird.
TIP: Use a spare model and try giving him a glowing weapon. Once you try it out you'll see it's not THAT hard after all.

Haha this from the King who has quite a bit of talent. I'll sacrifice one and see how it goes. Those were the fire images I remembered.

Watched those and that's probably the simplest example and explanation of how to get started.

I'll mull this over for a while and report back when I muster enough courage to try it

If your painting technique is layering you go from darkest shade in the deepest recesses to lightest highlight in the highest places.
Fire is the opposite, you go from lightest to darkest from the inside out at every strand, that's in theory all there is to know.

I don't have any clue if I even have a technique. I just paint and hope for the best! :o

I just went through my bones minis and saw the familiars, in that group there was a fire elemental so I will practice on that one.

When assembling Mantic minis do any of you fill in the gaps with greenstuff? I'm guessing slothfulness will take over and I wont but was wondering if any of you did.

Didn't use any for Skeletons and orcs.
Feared I'd have to for the Abyssal Dwarfs which you build from normal dwarfs cutting off their heads and putting on the AD pieces (which are metal, no less), but my cuts were very good, so GS'ing was unnecessary.
Haven't put together the Goblins, might not ever cause I'm a trifle disappointed in them. Have to take another look, cause I can't seem to find any goblins that satisfy me in all available variations right through one manufacturer's line (regular, spearpokers, archers, and characters).

When considering where you need Greenstuff, all you need ponder is the deepness of the shadow that goes into the spot.

Couldn't use laptop but now I can now write a proper post. I tried painting some of the mantic zombies that I put together and I was unhappy with them all. I'm pretty sure it's both lack of experience and proper colors. Really frustrating putting effort in only to get bad results. Didn't help that several things went wrong and an entire post I typed was erased when I hit submit, hence my angst filled previous post  .

Quickshade

This has been the only one that mentions that he takes time to remove what he puts on and that you need some sort of artistic license to use. I'm also glad that he mentioned to use lighter colors since the quickshade will darken it, stuff like this I always miss somehow :bites-lip: .

Spraypainting - I'm going to say it's for bad painters like myself :p . I have only ever seen before of minis primed black or white and then everything layered on top of that. It now makes sense that you would prime it in the color you want the majority of the miniature to be in, duh... I'll force myself to do this to get better results and more painting experience.

My photo skills = FAIL. Below is what I came up with. I'm really happy with the dragon mini on the right. Cape went from Yellow (Bad) to Orange (Worse) until realized a Dark Green coat would look much better. Still have a lot to learn but I've made progress since I last tried to paint.

Came across a good post after trying some new highlights. http://handcannononline.com/blog/2012/02/23/painting-with-contrast-nothing-to-fear/
Video on how to do Lave Bases: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTWIw9WpdWk. EonsOfBattle had several other ideas that were useful too.
