I haven't taken a look on the bones from reaper (I hate reaper figures altogether - ugly aesthetics - lack of unity between figures...) but I understand they are pretty detailed.
Pretty much I have to suggest as well that a nicely applied wash defines all the details that you need not miss.
Leave the dark wash in the deep recesses and just paint over the raised edges.
You don't have to water down a lot in my opinion. Just enough so that you don't obscure the details with extra paint.
The most I have ever watered down paint is 1:1. Usually I just mix 2 drops of colour with one drop of water, or in a very light colour 3 drops colour with 1 drop water.

Sorry for my late response by the way!

Another thing I want to add as a general suggestion is to "keep things dark". Especially when painting non-hero figures, I tend to keep figures as colourless as possible.
Your spiders are perfect examples as you also said you are not happy with the orange. Their back thing is excellent but their legs don't look as realistic.
On your first inspiration picture there are only tiny bits of orange showing, I don't know why you went for so many orange parts.
The 2 claws-teeth in particular should be totally black and glossy if possible.
Again this is just my personal taste, I just don't think that a couple of spiders should get that much attention in a game.

Tried a different style of painting like tasoe suggested. Left black in between each area. The grey on the top of their heads is hardly noticeable but the flash makes it seem way too distracting. The same to be said for their weapons. I used bronze and liberally coated with Agrax wash. They look quite unclean in person. Just need to get their eyes colored, I'm probably going with yellow. I'm asking for suggestions. Need to do a little more on the bases and very minor touchups. I'm happy with the results. Took lots longer than I was expecting.

Eyes: Kobolds live underground. I'd go with either glowing red (doesn't fit the rest of the clor scheme) or a milky bluish white (would be my choice).
Yellow doesn't fit the infrared sight cliché, but would be a great color choice.
The best choice: black. Just a plain glossy black.

I had thought of the Ashen Blue that I have but it wouldn't stand out. I thought of yellow as it'd be instantly recognizable and easily seen. Trying to get 1 mini done a week. Groups like these go fast and help me try new styles I'm hoping to use on the more detailed models. It seems going slower and doing a very thin base coat that is half opaque followed by another once the first is dry gives me the best results for detail preservation. I PM'd Mophus for some advice and one of the things he mentioned:
Mophus wrote:I've to paint every area twice, but the result is much better than one thick detail-absorbing layer of paint.

It definitely takes longer but results are better from those that I've tested. I'll keep on going and see what I can come up with.

Been working on some of the undead. Really enjoyed doing the zombies but the mummies were tedium to the extreme and results are passable. I have a lot more mummies to do but am not looking forward to doing them at all.

Am really happy with the results I was able to achieve with 'Came Elf' for my friend. It was quick simple and fun. My only critique is the alien eyes but that's minor at worst. The face looks good in person but really sloppy in the photo.

I can tell I've gotten better but lack many colors I'd like to use. Slowly getting them done.

Try to frame the eyes in black. And pull a line from top to bottom instead of a dot, getting narrower towards the bottom but still closing down to the bottom frame. I think that would work.
But beware: This is me talking! Sir Paint-No-Thing!

1) When you paint do you paint the deepest (under most colors) first and then paint those on top or does it depend on the mini?
For me it seems like by doing the deepest colors first and everything else that's on top of them works out best.
2) Is it normal to do a lot of touching up after getting it painted? It seems like I'll be doing that a lot on this mini as I get it finished.
3) Any tips/tricks to painting along an edge of a tabard (crotch flap?)? The mini I'm doing is below. I'm having trouble painting the yellow and keeping it a uniform width even though it is rasied up a little.

small brush steady hand also try to keep an even amount of paint on the brush through the whole line as the paint runs out the line gets smaller so don't try to do it in one pass and go slow

1) yes sir, for goblinoid skin as an example I use the dark Gnarloc green (foundation), then the lighter goblin (warboss), then the bright scorpion (the moot) followed by a bright yellow highlight.
I usually use a red foundation under red too, though the current "Evil Sunz Scarlet" is nice and thick.

2) I think so, I try to be as neat as possible but often find little overlaps or missed bits- usually after taking a macro photo :bites-lip:

3) Kind of relating to 1 and 2, I undercoat any yellow with foundation yellow (Iyanden darksun) and then put golden yellow over the top in a couple of applications.
A liberal dose of Cassandora Yellow wash or shade at the end works brilliantly- I don't highlight yellow.
Obviously I use Citadel paints, and I still have the old Bad Moon Yellow which is an absolute mongrel to work with on any substantial are- I only really use it for highlighting Goblinoid flesh.

Amusingly, I think your Mummies look ace!

edit: try using foundation yellow as a basecoat for gold, which is another tricky consistency in my opinion.

It's best to work off a palette and add water instead of straight from the pot- especially when attempting tricky colours like yellow or flesh.

As for human flesh, here's roughly what I do ( working off a black undercoat )
* dwarf flesh (now ratskin) in thin applications, may take a couple of goes to get it consistent over the mini
*liberal dose of flesh wash, let it dry
*re apply the dwarf/ratskin flesh as before
*50/50 mix of dwarf/ratskin and elf/kislev flesh, leaving the "corners" (under the hairline, jawline etc)
*highlight raised areas with elf/kislev flesh
*final application of watered down Ogryn Flesh/Reikland Flesh

I should mention I never paint lips or nipples especially, the washing process takes care of them.
If you do though, a good tip is to not paint the top lip.

Thanks. The more time that passes since having painted them the more I like them. That seems to be how it goes with me.

I'll see if I can get a good photo of my newly painted cleric. Damned if I didn't try a lot but he has hellishly googly eyes and I can't get them right no matter how much I try. Most the time I get them in 1 or 2 tries max but for whatever reason his eyes just won't do anything but googly....
