I'd agree on the following guideline if it's OK for everybody. Basically what Tasoe said, but more anal-retentively expressed.
One of the following has to be original HeroQuest:
- at least half of the miniature's mass
- the base plus the mini's scale (the base can be a replica, like the self-made ones from Sjeng and Zealot's HQ-bases; of course an HQ base can be used as a basis for a beautiful basework - it doesn't have to be, but may be flat)
The mini has to be Fantasy in style (No Sci-Fi, no steampunk etc.) and fit into an HQ game.
The miniature may be a showcase piece, but then it's gotta be at least half and recognizably an original HeroQuest figure.
Did I forget something? Or is it too restrictive?
This aims to have us paint up and modify/convert a figure that either is playable in an HQ game with original HQ minis or is a beautiful piece of art to be showcased and scream "HeroQuest".

I'll just chime in that I love being able to actually play with my gift miniatures.
It's always a hit when washi's orc and tasoe's drummer orc rips up the place - or Spiky's wizard runs amok!
At the very least I'd personally prefer HQ bases being a must.

Basically, I feel the same. Are Zealot bases included? The ones with the skulls and stone tiles?

Honestly, i am more on tasoes side.
Yes it must seamlessly fit inbetween HQ models, but it is not necessary to have rules like "half or more original" - that's overly restrictive. Especially as there are LOTS of (evil) characters without model. What would Wardoz possibly look like before he is turned into a zombie? The Witch Lord?
No way building them if you restricted to using a cylinder of original plastic in the middle in order to fulfill that requirement.
I would more go by "it has to be recognizeable without name on the base"
So if you get a Balur the Fire Mage, everybody should see on the first glance that this is Balur and no-one else. So i would go for size-bound (to fit with the rest) and for story-bound (has to be somebody from the game); but i would not go for plastic-bound (Ampersands Elf is a beauty - why not using!)
And - i certainly would send a model with a HQ base, but anybody who receives my name: Me, personally, i don't need a HQ Base! Mine are on a transparent base and anything i receive will also be on a transparent base half an hour later; so anybody who receives my name: for me the base doesn't matter.

I can more than live with that. Didn't even think of special characters to be proxied.

No no, don't worry, look it's not that complicated. Just paint a HQ miniature.
That's basically the rule. Paint a HQ mini and write your name underneath.
And don't be a dick pushing the limits of what constitutes a HQ mini.
It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that.

I specifically said I was using anal-retentive words and then declared twice that it was bullshit.
What the fraggle is going on now?

sounds like it's my fault when no other reason is given.

Thanks for posting the 2013 exchange results on the blog. looking through the minis I'd say, there are the rules for 2015.
