What I would try is gloss varnish everything (gloss varnish is much harder and protective than matt varnish),
then matt varnish over everything with a vengeance (takes back the gloss),
and then use gloss varnish with a brush (also from Vallejo) only where I want gloss.

It sounds complicated, but it gives the most protection. This is a game board, after all.
Try it on a portion, give the stuff the appropriate drying times in between the steps and see how it is.
A word of warning: I do not have any experience with Water effects, but I don't see any reason not to try what I described above.

I use this method for every painted piece intended for playing.

Excellent advice on the varnish. Thats what I'll do. I love this site for the feedback.

I got a reply from Vallejo this evening. I dont need to varnish the water effect. Better to do everything else first and then add the water effect.

That's actually how I do select areas of gloss.

If you ever want pooled water, yacht varnish is excellent for that!

Any progress made on your board?

FigoMurphy,

I finally came across one of the videos I was thinking about on YouTube (For Object Source Lighting effects), this link is actually for part 2 of the tutorial, but it has the majority of the info you are likely looking for... OSL TUTORIAL LINK. Clearly you'll have to adapt some of the specific techniques here, but I think there is some good info to get started.

Just small bits and pieces. I'll have some time over the easter so I plan on getting stuck in this week.

That's great. Thank you so much for taking the time to find this. I'll give it a go tonight.

Just a quick update on the board. Ages since I got a chance to do anything. Just about ready to varnish. I'll add some moss and water/slime after varnish.

What do you guys think of the scull graffiti?

And are the flames up to scratch?

I think the flames are missing some glow around them :)
