Reaper Bones figures are often similar style and scale as the Remake figures and I have used them as proxies for years also.

Regarding the new ATOH Ogres, yes, they are gigantic but are still no worse on the board for crowding than any two square monster (the remake Giant Wolves actually crowd a bit less than the 90's ones because with the new one they tried to elevate the wolf body so it doesn't extend past the base). The Frozen Horror is indeed ridiculous in size and they 100% did not care that it doesn't make as much sense. Into the Northlands just explains he just can go where he wants to anyway!

I looked over the quests and one of the ATOH ones moved furniture around (and even removed one piece) to accommodate the bigger monsters. Otherwise it doesn't make much difference... they have a slightly greater reach but also are going to be more easily within reach to hit. If you can find a "boss" Monster in a room and just kill him there it's not such a big deal vs. him roaming all around the board.

I don't see myself making the new HeroQuest compatible with the Old version. This is mainly due to house rules and expanded spell/treasure/equipment cards.

With the Elf and Wizard in the older version I have ways for them to gain extra spells, and I have these additional spells handy. But in the newer version we have additional heroes with their own unique spell sets, but I have no further spell sets tailored to these heroes. Well Spells of Darkness could be suitable to the Warlock, and the Druid could potentially take an Elemental spells, but this leaves me completely baseless for the Bard.

I also have an expanded treasure deck in the older version, which I suppose crafting ingredients would only increase the deck further. But the whole crafting mechanic interferes with all the additional potions I have from the original. I'm comfortable with certain options only working on certain heroes, but the new version changes this dynamic be allowing all heroes to use the same potions. This method is ok too especially with crafting. There's also the Wand of Magic, which negates the Potion of Magical Aptitude, which I feel would need to be moved to a much later quest pack

drathe also made dual wielding Equipment cards, which I've grown accustomed to using in my older version, but since the introduction of the Rogue, the prospect doesn't quite match up. Naming the Rogue as Ambidextrous, suggests he's the only hero that can duel wield, which makes it seem incompatible with the other heroes.

I had a method of gameplay that worked for the original, but mixing it with the new one complicates things. I'm fine with 2 different versions.

Thanks Kurgan and thanks Wally! I skipped on the new HQ system for now and will get into it later one day maybe. The miniature and size incompatibility issue turns me off bigtime to be honest although I am super intrigued with the new missions. If I get the new one I ll gonna keep both systems separate like Wally I guess, playing the old one on my 3-d board and the new one with the new board and new minis.

Instead I got my hands on Zombicide Black Plague for now, and I am in the process of painting up a zombie army and building a 3 d board for it. :skeleton: :zombie: :) :zombie: :skull: :orc: |_P

Oh, you meant compatibility as in size!? I misunderstood. Well of course that's going to be a little uneven. Considering I have most figurines counterparted from each version (asides Rise of the Dread Moon) I didn't quite question it. Of course I won't be using the new versions monsters on the old board.

Re: New Hero Quest compatibility

Postby Weltenlaeufer » Saturday January 25th, 2025 3:14pm

So I finally started playing again on my homemade board....oldschool. For now we are playing through the basegame, Kellars Keep and Return of the Witchlord....but I am thinking ahead....

I am still pretty pissed they changed the friggin board and mini size on the remake. They could have just stayed consistent ffs :/ oh yeah and the cartoony characterdesign sucks to while I am at it :elf: :D lol

But anyway, so I am thinking about getting my hands on the new expansions at least for the missions and gonna source minis for all of this elsewhere to make it compatible with my Hirstarts board. Thats gonna be a lot of new minis from somewhere else....damn...Could have been so much easier if they made the remake the same friggin SIZE and the same friggin bases!!!! :fimir:  ARGH.... anyway.......

Does anyone know if slev is still around in the forum?

He made some killer adjustments to the missionquestbooks which I use all the time and was wondering if he is planning to do the same for the new expansions.

The Spirit Queen’s Torment and Prophecy of Telor are usable with the original stuff. They don’t require any new minis or special tiles. The minis that come with those expansions are not required and just alternate version of the Game System minis. You may want proxies for the Bard and Warlock figures to fit the old board. A lot of people don’t like the orc bard anyway, so you could get any bard-like figure instead. The only thing is there are 4 new artifacts in the new game system that can be found in these expansions. Its easy enough to look up what they do.

Another option is to buy the newly released First Light box. It comes with a new-sized board, that could theoretically fit in the old box. You could probably fit it under the armory platform with the furniture (not sure though). It also comes with the new artifact cards that can be found both in SQT and PoT. The new board would work with all the new expansions and you can still use your original components.

Thank you Sir Rick! Thats really good to know. :) I really wanna work in the new expansions/missions with my old-school sized 3-D board which I build during Covid, thats why a new board isnt really an option for me. But at least I can use the new cards if there are new ones, plus content. I think I will just buy the expansions for the quest books and additional cards then. The translucent minis look really cool in terms of effect of the translucency, still not a fan of their character design but maybe I can rebase a few that kinda work and put them on the old bases if they are not too big in comparison to the old minis. :) Thanks again!
