New Hero Quest compatibility

Postby Weltenlaeufer » Saturday March 23rd, 2024 4:19pm

Is anyone here using their old Hero Quest Game System with the new Expansion packs? I own the classic Game plus Kellars Keep and I am on the fence on getting the new expansion packs at least or maybe even the whole basegame with it.

It looks like the new board, minis and tiles are bigger than the original...so I was wondering if anyone does a hybrid game or did everyone switch completely to the new basegame and system or came up with another solution to make the games compatible?

The expansion packs look really cool, I am just not too hyped over the new mini designs but maybe I come around to it :D I love the idea of the new expansion packs, they look really cool!

Re: New Hero Quest compatibility

I combine them all the time. Actually while waiting for the Mythic tier to ship, I took a scan of the original classic board and had it blown up (so the squares were 1x1 inch as the new one was supposed to be) and had it professionally printed (as a quad fold) via BoardGamesMaker. I use that on all my streamed games.

I use the remake furniture and tiles whenever possible, but also mix in classic style figures (along with some custom tiles) for variety. None of the classic stuff really looks out of place on the remake board. Some people will say stuff is "crowding" but that's not strictly true. The MOTM/ROTDM furniture tends to be slightly bigger (takes up more room on the board) but keep in mind that the remake Game System furniture is often actually SMALLER than the classic era cardboard+plastic furniture. So it fits fine.

Where you get crowding are with the default Abominations. They have the one hand reaching forward and the spear jutting out the other way. These guys will crowd you no matter what board you are using (especially when they are crammed into one of the smaller rooms). I have even favored using the alternate Abominations (Mythic tier and SQT/PoT) to make this a little better. Having monsters that are slightly different sizes side by side is no problem. You can use the classic heroes with the remake ones too (though when are you likely to have two barbarians together? I guess you could make one an NPC but even that isn't necessary).

If someone owns both classic and remake, I would not be afraid to mix them together. Maybe at first someone will nitpick but they will quickly get over it as the game gets going. It's like having a few painted characters but most unpainted for another example. I don't care if the bases are different shapes, it's all good because so much of the game is your imagination anyway.

Maybe someone will be worried about putting the remake assets onto a classic board, but if you have that you most likely have the bigger board. I HAVE heard some horror stories about the flimsiness of the Haslab version's board (ripping in the middle). I actually haven't yet used it for a game, I've always used this larger sized classic board instead (I printed it with matte finish so it wouldn't reflect back at the camera like the other shiny surfaces). I like having the "boot tile" On there, it's fine. ;)

I use the new board since the squares are larger (help with the old crowding). I use the new furniture because it is solid and less flimsy. I use the new tiles because they are 1"x1" to fit the new board better. Otherwise minis and wooden dice and spell/treasure cards etc. I use the older stuff.

Thanks Kurgan for your detailed answer! |_P The idea to use a scan of the classic board and have it print is great! I might do that or maybe get the Basegame for the collection in the end. It looks really cool.

Thanks for your answer Jdean, thats cool you mix both systems! |_P What I get out of your answer is that the size of things seems to be an issue when you want to play on an older board.

I am asking because I am trying to figure out how to make it work to play with the expansions on my home-made 3-d board I made out of Hirstarts a while ago which has a squaresize of the classic board(https://forum.yeoldeinn.com/viewtopic.php?f=165&t=5014&start=70. I would love to use the expansions playing on this but back then I had to decide which size I am going to make the tiles and I opted for the original size not the 1ich square size, cause I wanted to stay true to the original.

Furniture wont probably an issue but the minis might be. Do you guys think the minis work on the old square size or do you think they could be re-based (they look pretty solid/one with the base on what I see on the pics, so I dont know if rebasing is an option).

Regarding the new tiles, I can probably just scan and resize them for the board (thanks Kurgan for that scan idea!) but I got a find a solution for the minis.

Some of the new minis are A LOT bigger. The different Ogres and the Frozen Horror to name a couple. If you're trying to use the new minis on your board, hallways will be the biggest challenge even if you re-based everything. Some of the minis like Orcs and Goblins are small and re-basing should do the trick. Others, like Kurgan pointed out, the Abominations would still be a bit large and you'll have trouble.

Thank you Jdean!

Damn thats what I thought. It doesnt look like the new minis are going to be easy to rebase. I can use the old ones for the classic expansions but the new expansions introduce a whole new range....Would be dope if Thantos/Eddie gets together with Boris again to kick off a Lytchmyre 2 kickstarter with sculpts for the new expansions! I dont like the new cartoony style that much, new Boris's sculpts would be epic...One can dream! :D

I was long on the fence but the new expansions really look interesting so I guess I just gonna start with the new baseset and collect the expansions of the new system and see how I can work around the board challenge :)

I find Oldhammer minis to represent the ones from the new Packs. Place them on Zealot bases. I prefer the old style minis too. With GW releasing Warhammer: The Old World, they are re-releasing some of the old minis sculpts. This can help with some costs rather than finding the original expensive ones.

That's a great idea! Do you have any site recommendation from where to source these from other than ebay, I mean the new ones and the old ones? :orc: :fimir: :D :goblin:

The old minis, Ebay is about the easiest source. Unless you have a GW store near you with old sculpts in stock. For the new sculpts, can easily just find them on http://www.warhammer.com Go to Shop and choose The Old World. So far Bretonnia, the Undead, and Orcs and Goblins lines have been released. Dwarfs will be next.
