Battlemasters is a great side by side game for Heroquest, and it gives people some nice alternative minis like Archers.
And I agree certain quest books definitely should be later due to difficulty.
I think for me though, the only ones I found to have real difficulty were the Elf and Barbarian Packs for straight up higher difficulty.
And then the Dark Company because it is all 4 basically at the same time. So those have always been the end of the list for me.

Kurgan has pointed out that the original Game System artifacts (Orc's Bane, etc.) can again be found in the Prophecy of Telor bonus expansion by Stephen Baker. I believe their inclusion indicates The Prophecy of Telor isn't meant to be played with the same heroes after the original 4 Quests of the Quest Book, but rather apart from them or in place of them.

Stephen Baker wrote:As I sat down to begin, I thought about what I wanted for this adventure. How was this quest going to be a little different? I wanted the narrative to build off the original ones in some way. I also wanted it to stand alone and not become something that might conflict with any possible rerelease of the original expansions. Most importantly, I wanted this adventure to have something for everyone. For new players I wanted this to be a quest that would further lead them to becoming a fan of the game. For those fans returning to the HeroQuest game after many years, I wanted this to be an adventure that would help rekindle their passion for the game—an adventure that would bring back memories of games long past.

So if your returning to Heroquest and want something new, The Prophecy of Telor is ready to play with fresh heroes (then on to Spirit Queen's Torment and Crypt of Perpetual Darkness.) HispaZargon's difficulty comparison bears this out. If you're instead looking to introduce new players into your group (say your boys have completed the Quest Book but now your daughter is old enough to play), everybody can play together through Prophecy of Telor with a bit of difficulty tweaking from Zargon.

Yeah, I think the three new questpacks are designed to also allow to play them with a different party of heroes without affecting the rest of the storyline. It makes sense trying to promote the use of the new heroes, especially the Bard in Spirit Queens Torment.

Good insights Daedalus. Whether by accident or on purpose, the Spirit Queen's Torment alternates between saying "if you don't already have it" and other times being silent when an Artifact is found that was featured in the Game System or Kellar's Keep/Return of the Witch Lord (meaning multiple copies are possible; Crypt of Perpetual Darkness makes no such caveats) ). That does make them fuzzy in terms of being being able to be stand alone adventures or following the classic quests. You could also read that as some of the heroes having died in the process and been replaced by others, but...

In theory as I read the NA rules though, Artifacts are never truly lost, because Zargon can just make them a special treasure near the beginning of a new quest (or a revamped version of a quest being repeated) even in the event of a Total Party Kill, although some NA artifacts are able to be "used up" and those tend to be repeated.

If years have gone by between adventures though, its up to you whether you dust off your old character sheets or "start over."

I'm going with Original Box > Kellar > Witch Lord > Spirit Queen > Crypt > Telor > Frozen (I assume they aren't lying about it, and it'll be out far before we're actually through everything else... nobody has the type of schedule that allows for playing a whole hell of a lot these days).

As for reasoning, it just makes sense to me... and that's about it.

I would be interested in the details how you did this comparison.
I also think, your entire analysis is worth a separate thread, as it goes into great detail.

Difficulty charts are all well and good to come up with an analytical method of determining quest difficulty and therefore quest order, but I agree, they have muddled this topic somewhat and deserved their own thread instead.

Hi, as promised, I have already created this new thread including all the data obtained with the first version of my quest's Difficulty Calculation Model.

For clarity purposes, I have also extracted and moved there all the related messages already posted here.

Order of all expansions?

Postby BroccoliRage » Sunday December 18th, 2022 6:39am

[post moved by Lestodante]
I bought the Avalon Hill relaunch and I'm having an absolute blast with it. I've bought all the expansions, and I see that on this very site I can access the UK expansions as well.

So my question is, what is the order of the expansions? It seems to me that Keller's Keep immediately follows the core game quest book, whiich is followed by Return of The Witch Lord and then the Frozen Horror. But where do the UK expansions fit in? Is there an order, or can I do it however I like?
